TINY DOSES OF DOOM 1

On Dragon Ball

I have to admit... I actually like Dragon Ball. In fact, I’d go so far as to say I love Dragon Ball actually. I am only about 4 volumes in (out of 42) and already have a (excuse the pun) ball with it! The funny thing is, I used to despise Dragon Ball in my early teen years, and at present, I can safely say that being a hater does NOT pay off in this case. I used to listen to a lot of Trash Taste and adopted all of their opinions as my own and when they declared their distaste for Dragon Ball, I immediately felt an obligation to hate Dragon Ball as well. I hadn’t even seen it either. I couldn’t even tell you what the titular dragon balls did at that point.

What changed was I’ve been on a massive manga and comic kick recently and I just came off Uzumaki, I wanted something lighter to read and Dragon Ball seemed perfect. I set aside my preconceived notions and just started reading. It wasn’t even a gradual enjoyment either, I started enjoying it from the very first chapter.

I think what hooked me was the art style. That’s to be expected from an Akira Toriyama work, a real legend in the industry, and despite his tragic passing, his artwork will continue to impact not just manga but illustration as a whole for the time to come. It’s his art that brings this world to life and gives it a sort of vibrancy. I am like the Queens of the Stone Age song in the sense that I’m designer or rather a designer… actually, a design student but I specialize in illustration so when I compliment the art of Akira Toriyama, it is an objective fact.

Nothing is without its flaws however and the one problem I have with this is that the humor tends to be rapey at times. Very much so, most manga can be so usually and that is never okay but this takes it to the extreme. There is probably one in every chapter. EVERY CHAPTER. I wish I was exaggerating but if that is something you can get past, then you should read it. The point where I am at currently, they have eased up on it quite a bit so that’s an improvement and that makes passage for them to find humor in other aspects of the story, and the arc I’m in right now is hilarious. I wouldn’t spoil it but why didn’t they make these types of jokes from the beginning?

That brings us to the end of this piece. It’s just something small I said I would write. I will aim to get these out on Saturdays and they’re all reader decided too. If you want my socials to suggest something. Most people who read these already know where to find me but if you don’t, then good luck, babe because I’m not telling you.
