10. NOPE, GET OUT IS NOT JORDAN PEELE’S MASTERPIECE

  10. NOPE, GET OUT IS NOT JORDAN PEELE’S MASTERPIECE My return to the world of film discussion through Nope I watched Nope yesterday and cannot get that movie out of my head. I meant to discuss The Piano Teacher and I prepared an entire review for that but I scrapped it in favor of this (pretty much last minute). I love both movies and agree with the message of both movies but at the same time, Nope challenges me more. Believe it or don’t, writing is actually very therapeutic to me, I use it as a tool to improve my knowledge so I’d much rather tackle something that would prove more difficult to dissect.  It is also worth mentioning that I want to start writing movie reviews again. Yes, I used to write movie reviews and no, you cannot see them. I’m a bit embarrassed by those reviews. My voice wasn’t as developed and I wrote a lot of negative reviews as well. Your average snarky, know-it-all reviewer; that’s what I was but that’s then. I want to start on a new foot....

9. HESITATING BENEATH THE MARQUEE MOON

Image
9. HESITATING BENEATH THE MARQUEE MOON A Gaze at Marquee Moon by Television I said that I would review something completely different but this album, it just hypnotized me. I was completely captured by it and on a whim last night, I decided to investigate. What about this album draws me in? I only read the lyrics yesterday but this album has been in my rotation for a week now. With lyrics and sound in synergy, I have an even deeper understanding of this album which I want to share with you, reader. LAYER 1: SEE NO EVIL, HEAR NO EVIL… BUT I HEAR SOME GOOD MUSIC There’s no better place to start than the scene of the crime, the sonic level. This is where the album initially impacted me. I’m not very good at describing music, I can talk about the stories they carry through them but the music that acts as the vehicle is difficult for me to discuss. I will still try my best because it is crucial to this investigation.  At times punk, at times dreamy, and at times eerie; this ...

8. I'M THE NEW GREEP, I WANT THE NEW SOUND

Image
I’M THE NEW GREEP, I WANT THE NEW SOUND An informal discussion of The New Sound by Geordie Greep Not so recently, I heard The New Sound by Geordie Greep (of Black Midi fame). His debut solo album. When I first heard it in not-so-recent times, almost every aspect beyond the surface level was completely lost on me but two to three weeks ago, I revisited it and my Bongo Season had begun which I kicked off by relistening to every Black Midi album, and The New Sound (yes, I heard the new sound again). I also got heatstroke that day, I distinctly remember listening to Eat Men Eat (rather fitting) lying beneath a ceiling fan with my shirt halfway unbuttoned, I didn’t even have the energy to unbutton it all the way down. According to last.fm I heard the album 30 times in full since then (29 to be exact not counting my first listen). You can verify if you want. Where’s my last.fm? You ask. I’m not telling you. I don’t want to write a huge lyrical deep dive on the album or anyt...

6. A REVIEW OF FRAILTY BY JANE REMOVER

Image
A REVIEW OF FRAILTY BY JANE REMOVER The many places of Jane Remover I spend a lot of time in music discussion circles and always see comparisons between Jane Remover and Underscores. I will always prefer Underscores to Jane Remover. It’s no competition, they’re both great but it’s just a matter of finding Wallsocket before Frailty. I’ve had more time to explore Wallsocket’s world. Wallsocket felt like a true destination and Frailty just felt like a rest stop on my way home but I judged it too soon. I still prefer Wallsocket greatly but Frailty is still an amazing album, the genius of it flew over my head the first time around. I think I have a better grasp on it now. Before I begin the review; trigger warning for mentions of suicide and dysphoria which are two topics the album deals with— the former more than the latter. LAYER 1: I CAN’T FIND A WAY TO MANIPULATE ONE OF THE SONG TITLES TO FIT THE CONTENT OF THIS SECTION SO I’M BLOATING THE HEADING WITH WORDS TO APPLY S...

TINY DOSES OF DOOM 1

Image
TINY DOSES OF DOOM 1 On Dragon Ball I have to admit... I actually like Dragon Ball. In fact, I’d go so far as to say I love Dragon Ball actually. I am only about 4 volumes in (out of 42) and already have a (excuse the pun) ball with it! The funny thing is, I used to despise Dragon Ball in my early teen years, and at present, I can safely say that being a hater does NOT pay off in this case. I used to listen to a lot of Trash Taste and adopted all of their opinions as my own and when they declared their distaste for Dragon Ball, I immediately felt an obligation to hate Dragon Ball as well. I hadn’t even seen it either. I couldn’t even tell you what the titular dragon balls did at that point. What changed was I’ve been on a massive manga and comic kick recently and I just came off Uzumaki, I wanted something lighter to read and Dragon Ball seemed perfect. I set aside my preconceived notions and just started reading. It wasn’t even a gradual enjoyment either, I started e...

6. WE WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU BY THE AVALANCHES REVIEW

Image
WE WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU BY THE AVALANCHES REVIEW Grief in all its colors This album was never something I felt too strongly towards. It didn’t move me quite like Since I Left You did, and I admired the emphasis on plunderphonics on that album. But this one was more… I don’t even know what genre this is exactly; it’s everything. It's practically sprawling with life. One thread seems consistent throughout this album, though, and that’s grief. LAYER 1: THE DIVINE CHORDS The topic at hand is quite hefty, I think it’s best to talk about the album’s technical aspects first but even that is hefty. On second thought, it might even be easier to talk about the themes of grief on this album because at least that’s consistent. Unfortunately, I already typed the heading out and the word “chord” denotes a sonic aspect so we might as well talk about that.  The amount of genres that this album taps into is unbelievable. It still has that plunderphonic element that I longed for b...

5. WHY DO BIRDS SUDDENLY APPEAR? (A REVIEW OF PING-PONG)

Image
WHY DO BIRDS SUDDENLY APPEAR? (A REVIEW OF PING PONG) Ping-Pong is a manga about so much more than Ping-Pong. It’s about friendship, love, passion, heroism, what it means to be a human… but it’s also about ping pong. I read this recently and am just brimming with thoughts. There is a lot to tackle here, so let’s start with some of the more tangible elements of this manga. LAYER 1 : LET’S PLAY PING PONG Ping-Pong follows two main characters, Smile and Peko and shows their ever-changing relationship to ping pong and to the people around them. I promise you it’s interesting, more than interesting. The ping-pong matches are intense, and it’s drawn in a loose and fluid art style which is effective in creating both relaxed or intense scenes, it all depends on what needs to be conveyed. When you start reading, the dialogue can seem a bit corny, but the more you read, the more meaningful it becomes, and you start to notice how each character’s voice blossoms from their speech...
