6. A REVIEW OF FRAILTY BY JANE REMOVER

Image
A REVIEW OF FRAILTY BY JANE REMOVER The many places of Jane Remover I spend a lot of time in music discussion circles and always see comparisons between Jane Remover and Underscores. I will always prefer Underscores to Jane Remover. It’s no competition, they’re both great but it’s just a matter of finding Wallsocket before Frailty. I’ve had more time to explore Wallsocket’s world. Wallsocket felt like a true destination and Frailty just felt like a rest stop on my way home but I judged it too soon. I still prefer Wallsocket greatly but Frailty is still an amazing album, the genius of it flew over my head the first time around. I think I have a better grasp on it now. Before I begin the review; trigger warning for mentions of suicide and dysphoria which are two topics the album deals with— the former more than the latter. LAYER 1: I CAN’T FIND A WAY TO MANIPULATE ONE OF THE SONG TITLES TO FIT THE CONTENT OF THIS SECTION SO I’M BLOATING THE HEADING WITH WORDS TO APPLY S...

TINY DOSES OF DOOM 1

Image
TINY DOSES OF DOOM 1 On Dragon Ball I have to admit... I actually like Dragon Ball. In fact, I’d go so far as to say I love Dragon Ball actually. I am only about 4 volumes in (out of 42) and already have a (excuse the pun) ball with it! The funny thing is, I used to despise Dragon Ball in my early teen years, and at present, I can safely say that being a hater does NOT pay off in this case. I used to listen to a lot of Trash Taste and adopted all of their opinions as my own and when they declared their distaste for Dragon Ball, I immediately felt an obligation to hate Dragon Ball as well. I hadn’t even seen it either. I couldn’t even tell you what the titular dragon balls did at that point. What changed was I’ve been on a massive manga and comic kick recently and I just came off Uzumaki, I wanted something lighter to read and Dragon Ball seemed perfect. I set aside my preconceived notions and just started reading. It wasn’t even a gradual enjoyment either, I started e...

6. WE WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU BY THE AVALANCHES REVIEW

Image
WE WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU BY THE AVALANCHES REVIEW Grief in all its colors This album was never something I felt too strongly towards. It didn’t move me quite like Since I Left You did, and I admired the emphasis on plunderphonics on that album. But this one was more… I don’t even know what genre this is exactly; it’s everything. It's practically sprawling with life. One thread seems consistent throughout this album, though, and that’s grief. LAYER 1: THE DIVINE CHORDS The topic at hand is quite hefty, I think it’s best to talk about the album’s technical aspects first but even that is hefty. On second thought, it might even be easier to talk about the themes of grief on this album because at least that’s consistent. Unfortunately, I already typed the heading out and the word “chord” denotes a sonic aspect so we might as well talk about that.  The amount of genres that this album taps into is unbelievable. It still has that plunderphonic element that I longed for b...

5. WHY DO BIRDS SUDDENLY APPEAR? (A REVIEW OF PING-PONG)

Image
WHY DO BIRDS SUDDENLY APPEAR? (A REVIEW OF PING PONG) Ping-Pong is a manga about so much more than Ping-Pong. It’s about friendship, love, passion, heroism, what it means to be a human… but it’s also about ping pong. I read this recently and am just brimming with thoughts. There is a lot to tackle here, so let’s start with some of the more tangible elements of this manga. LAYER 1 : LET’S PLAY PING PONG Ping-Pong follows two main characters, Smile and Peko and shows their ever-changing relationship to ping pong and to the people around them. I promise you it’s interesting, more than interesting. The ping-pong matches are intense, and it’s drawn in a loose and fluid art style which is effective in creating both relaxed or intense scenes, it all depends on what needs to be conveyed. When you start reading, the dialogue can seem a bit corny, but the more you read, the more meaningful it becomes, and you start to notice how each character’s voice blossoms from their speech...

4. OOH, I READ YA... AND YOU CAN TOO!

Image
OOH, I READ YA… AND YOU CAN TOO! I’m satisfied with the number of books I read and how I engage with literature. I could read more, but I could also read less, or worse, not at all. Reading is one of my strongest habits. I make sure to read every single day. This is something that a few people I know happen to struggle with. For some, it’s not that they don’t want to read but rather that it’s a difficult habit to maintain consistently. I agree with that statement, it can be a time-consuming activity, how can you squeeze it into your schedule? I’d like to provide a few pointers on how you can read more! My first pointer is to take this piece with a grain of salt. Your relationship to reading cannot be dictated (not that I’m going to dictate your reading journey), and it requires experimentation on your part. This is less of a roadmap to becoming a natural reader and more of a backpack full of equipment to help you on your reading journey. Apologies for this but the fir...

3. TELEVISION AS A FORM OF BONDING

Image
TELEVISION AS A FORM OF BONDING I am about to make a confession which, now that I think about it, isn’t that bad: I spent (and still spend) a lot of my dinners in front of a TV screen and not around the dinner table. It gets worse because I prefer it that way. Looking back on those TV dinners, they were pleasant. It can’t be that bad since I always see posts online about how people can’t have dinner without watching YouTube.  My sister and I would usually watch whatever ongoing series happened to be airing at dinner time. These ranged from TV shows that held a special place in my heart to the worst slop that was somehow greenlit. But it’s not about the shows; it’s about the memories they hold.  We cut the cable a while ago and we made the switch to Netflix which made for more secluded dinners. We all watched our separate shows in separate corners of our separate worlds. I hadn’t even noticed how bad it was until just recently. I started watching Better Call ...

2. GET YOURSELF A RIVAL TODAY! CALL NOW!!

Image
GET YOURSELF A RIVAL TODAY! I think more people should have rivals, and I’m not kidding! Friends and family—now that’s all well and good, but if you only have friends, family, and potential romance, I hate to say it, but you’re missing out. A little friendly competition between two rivals can lead to them improving at whatever they’re competing in. Rivalry is a great way to motivate yourself to accomplish more than you set out to. Don’t twist my words though, not everything should be a competition but we all need a little competition and even if you aren’t convinced of rivalry by the end of this, I hope I can still urge you to explore different kinds of relationships. I’m not sure how apparent it is to the people I know but I do have a slight tendency to be competitive. It’s just how I was brought up and it used to be much worse. Every single aspect of my life was a competition and every new peer was an adversary. That is a VIP ticket to misery and poor self-esteem. O...
